Biorefinery as a tool to obtain multiple seaweed extracts for cosmetic applications

Abstract Seaweeds have been identified as a valuable source of natural ingredients and their use in cosmetics is being studied increasingly. This work sought to understand the possible uses three species brown algae present along Portuguese coast: Bifurcaria bifurcata , Saccorhiza polyschides Fucus spiralis . Considering idea more sustainable resources, two extracts (water (W) ethanol (E)) fractions (polysaccharides (P) residues (R)) were obtained employing biorefinery process. The evaluated terms antioxidant capacity (ABTS •+ DPPH • NO, O 2 •− FRAP assays), anti-hyperpigmentation (tyrosinase inhibition), biocompounds (phenolic compounds pigment content). biochemical analysis revealed that F. contain lipids carbohydrates than other species, while S. has proteins ashes. showed most promising results, regarding assays, tyrosinase inhibition, highest phenolic compound concentration, total chlorophylls carotenoids. In concept, from autumn season would be candidate all potential commercial value. also its merits activities content compounds.
